It’s amazing how many websites fail to take the one crucial step that makes all the difference between success and failure . . .
Ask the visitor to take action!
People who visit your website are there for a reason. They’ve Googled a search term and your site came up, or they liked one of your blog comments, or maybe someone referred them. No matter how they got there, they want you to solve a problem or relieve a pain.
You must give prospects valuable information and then lead them to take action. Tell them to sign up for your newsletter or to call you to set up a consultation. If you don’t ask for what you want, you won’t get it.
Website visitors need the solution you provide. Show them how you’re going to plan that dream trip to Hawaii or clean their house until it sparkles. Then ask them to take a baby step to get started.
Steer them through your sales process, but make it as effortless as possible for them. It’s easy and quick to sign up for your newsletter—and they will do it, especially if you reassure them that you’ll keep their information confidential.
It takes one click for them to go to another page of your website to learn more. Give them plenty of reasons to click. Make them hungry for more information, and establish yourself as the expert they want to work with to solve their problem or relieve their pain.
Calls to action can be as simple as . . .
- A link within the copy to a specific page, such as your about page or services page.
- A sign-up box for your newsletter on either side of the page.
- A request at the bottom of the page to contact you or to go to the next page to learn more.
- A link to another page on either side of your copy, in the margin.
- A video or audio with a verbal request to take action, or a URL visible on the video itself.
Links by themselves are calls to action, because people are conditioned to click them. To make a link even more effective, the text should tell the visitor what to do next, such as contact us today or click here for a free 15-minute consultation.
Your visitor needs a clear invitation to move forward in your sales process. Guide your visitors where you want them to go, and your site stats will improve along with your sales.
