We recently asked our ezine readers to tell us what they want us to write about. One of our recent Interact participants, Jennifer Muckelvaney of Precision Mailing, commented, “We’d like to get up to speed on our Facebook company  page. Any thoughts on how we find our current clients, new ones, etc., would be great!”

Before we discuss ways to find and connect with your target audience, we first need to focus on the sole purpose of your company page.

Many businesses believe that the purpose for their Facebook company page is to get as many fans as possible.

Wrong.

To the contrary, an effective company page is used to connect and build relationships with your clients and prospective clients and show them that you empathize with them. You know their struggles, and you want your company page to be their number one resource for solutions.

Ways to find and attract key influencers and your target audience to your company page using Facebook:

  • Join related industry groups on Facebook. Type industry keywords into the Facebook search box, and click on results that appear relevant. If you find company pages and groups that relate to your industry or that appear to have the same target audience as you, become a fan of their page, listen to the conversation and interact—you may make some friends. For example, if you own a real estate company, some keywords you might search for in the search box are home design, real estate news, interior decorating, home staging, real estate market, etc.
  • Comment on other company pages and group pages to increase your exposure. For example, if there is a like-minded company page—that has similar followers to your company page—that asks a question or provides an excellent article in one of their posts, provide feedback on their wall in the comment section. This will increase the chances of their followers seeing your valuable response and visiting your company page.

Ways to find and attract key influencers and prospects to your Facebook company page using the blogosphere:

  • Look outside of Facebook for influential bloggers who write about topics relating to your industry and who have the same target audience as you. Many times, when you visit a blog, the blogger will have a “Connect with Me on Facebook” button. If you like that blog, take advantage of connecting with them on new media platforms, and start listening to the conversation. Once you’re confident with the context being discussed on the company page or profile page, you can begin lending your expertise and joining the conversation with valuable input. Friend those whom you believe could be your prospective clients or key influencers.
  • Comment on like-minded blogs, and place your company page URL in the comment field designated for your website. This will help to increase traffic to your company page.

A word of caution: Don’t only connect with your current customers or prospective customers on new media platforms. Connect with others in your industry and influential peers on Facebook.
